Victor Boniface scored to inspire Bayer Leverkusen to a historic 2-1 victory over Augsburg in Saturday’s Bundesliga game.
The victory ensured that the newly crowned league champions ended the 2023/24 campaign without a defeat, finishing with 90 points from 34 games.
The Nigeria international forward found the back of the net with a cool strike in the 12th minute after receiving a timely pass from Amine Adli. Robert Andrich then doubled Bayer’s lead before the half-hour mark.
Augsburg made a spirited effort to try and avoid a defeat and got a consolation in the 62nd minute of the match when Mert Komur powered home a shot.
Bayer frustrated the efforts of Augsburg to come back into the game, holding on to the first-half lead to seal an important win.
The defeat ensured that Augsburg Finnish in the 11th position after gathering 39 points from 34 matches.
Boniface ended the season with 14 goals from 23 Bundesliga appearances, notwithstanding his struggle with injuries in the campaign.
The forward is a key member of the Nigeria national team and will be expected to feature when the Super Eagles take on South Africa and the Republic of Benin in World Cup qualifying games in June, under the watchful eyes of the new coach Finidi George.
