Azzedine Ounahi inspires Morocco into quarter-final of the 2026 World Cup

Azzedine Ounahi scored twice to ensure Morocco secure a 3-0 victory over Canada and clinch a place in the quarter-final of the 2026 World Cup on Saturday.  The forward opened the scoring in the 50th minute after he got a through pass from Achraf Hakimi, unleaching a ferocious shot into the bottom-corner of the net.  Ounahi then completed his brace in the 82nd minute with a long-range shot into the top-corner of the net to ensure that Morocco become the first African country to secure a place in the last eight of the global tournament.  Soufiane Rahimi put the icing on the cake when he bagged another goal at the death to ensure a complete demolition of the Canadians.  Morocco will continue to rely on newly signed Bayern Munich star, Ismael Sambari and Paris Saint-Germain wingback, Hakimi in their next World Cup game. Egypt join Morocco in round of 16 of 2026 World Cup

Egypt have joined Morocco in the round of 16 after securing a 1-1 (4-2 on penalties) against Australia at the ongoing 2026 World Cup on Friday.  The Pharaohs raced into the lead in the 13th minute of the game through a strike from Emam Ashour before Mohammed Hany turned the ball into his own net to ensure that Australia levelled, therefore, forcing the game into an extra-time.  Egypt made spirited effort to score but could not beat the defensive measure put in place by the Austrians, as the game entered into penalties.  Mohammed Salah and Hossan Andelmaguid converted their efforts, as Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington threw away their chances which ensured that Egypt nicked a place in the next round of the competition.  Egypt will face Argentina, the Lionel Messi’s side defeated another African team Cape Verde 3-2 on Saturday morning.  The loss of Cape Verde to the Argentines is the first since the 2026 global tournament started after securing three draws in the group stage, including holding former champions Spain.  Cape Verde have now joined Tunisia, South Africa, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Algeria, DR Congo and Ghana who lost to Colombia in exit.   Morocco will take on Canada for a chance to reach the last eight of the competition after securing a famous victory over Netherlands.

Riyad Mahrez announces retirement after Algeria World Cup exit

Riyad Mahrez has announced his retirement from international football after Algeria suffered a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup on Thursday.   Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye scored for the Swiss side to halt the progress of the African side and secure a place in the round of 16 of the tournament.  The former Manchester City star gave a good account of himself, scoring a brace against Austria in his first game in the competition after missing the first match against Argentina, where the team suffered 3-0, with Lionel Messi bagging a hat-trick.  The versatile forward featured for Algeria against Switzerland but could not help his side from losing in the game.  Mahrez has now called time on his illustrious career after more than a decade with the national team, having made his debut in 2014.  The forward won the African Footballer of the Year and BBC African Footballer of the Year in 2016 respectively before clinching the African Goal of the Year in 2019.  He is regarded as one of the best wingers in Africa and shone for Lecicester City, where he helped the team to win the Premier League in 2016 as well as Le Havre and City, where is highly regarded.

Defensive flaws: undoing of African teams, as Senegal bow out of 2026 World Cup

Five African teams have been ousted from the 2026 World Cup due to their defensive indisciplines, the latest being Senegal who surrendered their 2-0 lead to suffered 3-2 loss to Belgium.  Many of the African teams started their games well but the resilience needed to complete them was not always there, with some of them losing at the death to their opponents to end their dreams of clinching the trophy for the first time.  Senegal got an early lead against Belgium in the 25th minute through Habib Diarra and got the second in a spectacular manner through Ismaila Sarr.   The Terenga Lions were able to sustain the lead until 86th minute before Napoli star, Romelu Lukaku reduced the deficit and just three minutes later, Youri Tielemans equalised to force the game into an extra-time.  For Senegal to let go of a two-goal lead speaks volume of the defensive approach of the team, led by captain Kalidou Koulibaly.  Senegal’s defenders could only watch helplessly as Tielesmans grabbed his second goal of the game after benefitting from a Video Assistant Referee’s judgement, thus ending the progress of the Terenga Lions in the competition.  The wayout for African team DR Congo lost in a similar fashion as Senegal, surrendering their lead and early composure to England.  Besides Senegal and DR Congo, South Africa and Ivory Coast as well as Tunisia are already out of the 2026 World Cup, only Morocco have managed to weather the storm and qualify for the round of 16 so far.   To curb this noticeable flaw, African teams need to prepare psychologically for games, especially of this magnitude; the World Cup and coaches need to make intelligent tactical changes and enforce discipline, especially in the defence.

Harry Kane’s brace earns England victory over DR Congo

Harry Kane scored twice to inspire England to a 2-1 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in a round of 32 match of the World Cup on Wednesday.  The Bayern Munich star made a telling effort in the game to ensure the Three Lions nick a place in the round of 16, scoring in the 75th minute to cancel out Brian Cipenga’s solo strike in the seventh minute.  DR Congo started the game impressively with goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi making important saves and the African side deservedly got the opening goal.  The Leopards held on to their lead until Kane scored with a powerful header and added the second, hitting the roof of the net with his audacious strike.  DR Congo are now the fourth African country that got ousted in the competition after South Africa, Tunisia and Ivory Coast. Only Morocco have qualified for the round of 16 after they defeated Netherlands and Senegal will try Belgium for size later today.

Medhi Taremi: Iran captain labels 2026 World Cup “a disaster”

Iran skipper, Medhi Taremi has criticized the Federation of International Football Association for poor organization of the 2026 World Cup, labelling it a “disaster”.  The striker has revealed how his side has been finding it difficult with logistics at the global tournament, revealing that each time they finished playing a game, they would have to return to Mexico the same day.  Taremi said many of their logistic personnel were not issued visas which further compounded to their challenges at the competition.  Iran has three points from three games after three consecutive draws against New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt.   Taremi stated that FIFA president, Gianni Infantino paid a visit to his side’s dressing room and assured of a better condition but he has not seen any change.  “It is a disastrous World Cup; a disaster. I mean FIFA, they have to solve every problem here but unfortunately they could not solve it from the beginning,” Taremi said.  “Mr Infantino came to our changing room after the first game against New Zealand and said, ‘It is just the beginning…’ but the group stage finishes tomorrow.  “We don’t have our logistic people here – they don’t have a visa. How is it possible we always have to travel from Tijuana?   Taremi praised the hospitality of the people of Mexico but insisted that the right thing still needs to be done by providing the necessary things they need for them at the tournament.   “We love Mexico. They are humble people but as a [professional player in a professional competition, it’s not right,” he added.  “It is not fair, our opinion is, it is not fair. Is it fair for FIFA? Ok, good to them. But os is not fair. Who wants to help us? Of they want u to be out, then OK; let’s get out. But that’s not fair. We don’t have recovery or logistic people to help us. We always co,plain about these things but no one helps, no one.  “We have to fight against everything here.I don’t know what people want. As we see it from our perspective, yeah, they like that I think …how possible it is, if we play 90 minutes and we have to go back to Tijuana?”  Iran are now out of the competition after Algeria and Australia played out a 3-3 draw.

Vozinha’s heroics inspire Cape Verde into round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup

Vozinha has helped Cape Verde to reach the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup, following three consecutive draws.  The goalkeeper delivered a five-star display in his side’s opening game against Spain which earned him a man-of-the-match award.  Vozinha made many saves in the encounter and dedicated his performance in the game to his mother who could not be at the tournament due to some logistic reasons.  One of the co-host countries, the United States of America decided to help the goalkeeper to realise his dream of seeing his mother cheer him at the global tournament by removing the bottlenecks and ensuring that she reunites with her son.  The goalkeeper has now inspired Cape Verde to clinch another crucial draw against Saudi Arabia, which was enought to see the team seal a place in the next stage of the tournament.  Egypt reach knockout stage Egypt have joined other African countries that have nicked a place in the knockout stage of the World Cup after playing out a 1-1 draw w’against Iran on Saturday.  The result ensured that the Pharaohs finished second in their group with five points behind leaders, Belgium.  In another game, Senegal secured a 5-0 victory over Iraq with Idrissa Gueye bagging a brace in the game on Saturday. The result is not, however, enough to secure the side secure an automatic spot in the next stage of the tournament.

Ferdinand: Man United legend lashes out at Henry, Rooney for negatively criticising Ronaldo

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has expressed his dissatisfaction with France legend Thierry Henry, as well Wayne Rooney for negatively criticising Portugal star, Cristiano Ronaldo.  The former defender was surprised when Arsenal legend, Henry harshly criticized Ronaldo after his inability to turn heads in his side’s opening game against DR Congo at the 2026 World Cup, as he could not help the Portuguese team to secure three points, failing to score in the game.  Prior to the start of the World Cup, the former Real Madrid star missed some goalscoring opportunities during his side’s 2-1 win over Nigeria in an international friendly game.  The unimpressive performances has drawn the irk of Henry and Rooney recently, notwithstanding that the former England star played along with the Portuguese forward at the Old Trafford, the criticisms have not gone down well with Ferdinand.  “The way Thierry Henry talks about Cristiano Ronaldo sometimes, you’d think they had some personal issue. I don’t understand it because we’re talking about one of the greatest footballers the game has ever seen. Whatever your opinion, you have to respect everything he’s achieved in football,” Ferdinard said.  “Sometimes I listen and think, does he really appreciate what Cristiano has done for this sport? Criticism is part of football, but there’s a difference between honest analysis and constantly focusing on the negatives.”  “The same goes for Wayne Rooney. I still don’t know what changed between him and Cristiano, but at times it feels like more than normal football criticism. You don’t have to agree with everything Cristiano does, but you should acknowledge the incredible career he’s had and the standards he’s set.”  “Players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, changed football forever. Whether you prefer one over another, their achievements deserve appreciation and respect.””  Ronaldo seemed to have shut his critics by scoring a brace against Uzbekistan at the age of 41 years, helping his side to reach the knockout stage of the tournament.
