NFF deserves credit for organizing quality friendly matches

The Nigeria Football Federation deserves to be praised for organizing quality friendly matches for the Super Eagles recently.  The federation put together a four-nation tournament, named Unity Cup, where the national team participated along with India, Jamaica and Zimbabwe.  The Super Eagles clinched the trophy for the fourth time after defeating Zimbabwe and Jamaica in London, which ensured the team’s upward movement on the Federation of International Football Federation’s rankings.   The NFF has been heavily criticized in recent times for the failure of the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by Mexico, Canada and the United States of America after losing to Democratic Republic of Congo in one of the playoffs on penalties.  The Super Eagles thus, continued in their obscurity, having missed the previous edition of the tournament in Qatar.  Notwithstanding the unfortunate results, the NFF put together two quality friendlies against Poland and fifth-placed Portugal on FIFA rankings.  Nigeria played out a 2-2 draw with Robert Lewandowski’s Poland before losing 2-1 to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal which afforded coach Eric Chelle an opportunity to access new players.  The friendlies will no doubt prepare the team for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game in September this year.   Super Eagles’ supporters can look forward to better days from the NFF under the leadership of Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau.

Eric Chelle gets new role, Finidi faults decision

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has been handed a new contract by the Nigeria Football Federation which will now see him handle the U-23 side as part of his schedules, which has not gone down well with former international star, Finidi George.  The Franco-Malian will earn double of his previous salary, with the NFF set to pay him 100 dollars monthly after the officials of the federation recently revealed their satisfactions with his performances since he started coaching the national team.  The Super Eagles clinched a bronze medal at the last edition of the Africa Cup of Nations after losing to Morocco in the semi-final and defeating Egypt in the thirdplace match.  The three-time African champions missed the 2026 World Cup by a whisker after losing to DR Congo on penalties during one of the African qualifying playoffs.   Notwithstanding the Super Eagles’ inability to nick a place at the global tournament, NFF has reduced the burden placed on Chelle by agreeing to pay his backup coaching staff.  Reacting to the new deal and new role, former coach of the national team, Finidi George has disagreed with the NFF, stating that his new role as the U-23 coach can affect his current work.  The former Ajax forward was in charge of the team before he was sacked, following a number of unimpressive results, part of which affected the Super Eagles’ target of reaching the global tournament.  Chelle’s first duty after renewing his contract with NFF will be to qualify Nigeria for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
