Riyad Mahrez has announced his retirement from international football after Algeria suffered a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup on Thursday.
Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye scored for the Swiss side to halt the progress of the African side and secure a place in the round of 16 of the tournament.
The former Manchester City star gave a good account of himself, scoring a brace against Austria in his first game in the competition after missing the first match against Argentina, where the team suffered 3-0, with Lionel Messi bagging a hat-trick.
The versatile forward featured for Algeria against Switzerland but could not help his side from losing in the game.
Mahrez has now called time on his illustrious career after more than a decade with the national team, having made his debut in 2014.
