Egypt and Cape Verde secured a famous 1-1 draw each against Belgium and Spain while Ivory Coast nicked their first victory against Ecuador at the ongoing World Cup 2026 tournament in Group E and G respectively.
The Pharaohs started the game stronger than the Belgians, as they made many attempts on goal, their efforts paid off in the 19th minute after Emman Ashour unleashed a sublime shot from outside the box into the right-corner of the net to open the scoring.
Coach Rudi Garcia introduced Romelu Lukaku to bolster the team and the Napoli star did not disappoint as he forced Mohammed Hany to turn the ball into his own net in the 66th minute of the match. The goal saved Belgium from an embarrassing defeat and salvaged a point for the team against the seven times African champions.
Cape Verde nick a favourable draw
Cape Verde secured a 0-0 draw against former world champions, Spain in the ongoing World Cup on Monday.
The African team frustrated the efforts of the Spanish side with coach Bubista ensuring that there were at least nine players behind the ball to secure the team’s first point at the 2026 edition of the tournament. The result has placed Cape Verde in a favourable position in their group as each of the teams in Group H has one point. The team popularly as the Blue Sharks will play Saudi Arabia in their next game on June 27.
Ivory Coast secure first African victory
Ivory Coast started their World Cup campaign in top gear, after securing a 1-0 win over Ecuador in the 2026 World Cup.
The Elephants settled for a defensive strategy against the South American side and ensured a clean sheet in the encounter.
Ecuador missed several chances to open the scoring but could not find the back of the net, before Ivory Coast secured a late-minute goal to secure three points in the game.
The Ivorians are placed second in Group E behind Germany, who now lead the group following their 7-1 demolition of Curacao.
Tunisia, another African country suffered a 5-1 defeat against Sweden at the tournament which is the second loss by an African team in the competition after South Africa lost their opening game against Mexico.
DR Congo and Ghana will open their campaigns at the tournament on June 16 and 18 respectively against Portugal and Panama.
