WAFCON: Nigeria ease past Tunisia in opening game

Nigeria secured a 3-0 victory over Tunisia in the opening 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Group B game at Stardi Larbi, Casablanca in Morocco on Sunday.

The Super Falcons hit the ground running, with Assisat Oshoala scoring the opening goal as early as the 4th minute. The former Barcelona star powered home a fine header after she was set up by Babajide Omorinsola.

Nigeria continued to dominate the game with quick passes and registered the second goal of the match some moments before the half-time break. Omorinsola combined well with Oshoala and notched in a fine strike. The goal was reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and it was made to stand.
Tunisia struggled to curb the attacking prowess of the Super Falcons in the second-half.

Nigeria made some substitutions, with Christy Ucheibu coming in for Deborah Abiodun and Toni Payne making way for Folasade Ijamilusi.

Tunisia had some opportunities to score but could not get past goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

Chiwendu Ihezuo then completed the impressive performances for the Super Falcons with a left-footer strike in the 84th minute.

The Super Falcons paid homages to former Nigeria international, Peter Rufai and Liverpool star Diogo Jota who passed away on July 3.

What next for Super Falcons?

Nigeria will play Botswana in their second game in the tournament.

The match will take place at Stade Larbi, Casablanca on July 10.
