Peter Rufai: Former Nigeria goalkeeper passes away

Former Nigeria international goalkeeper, Peter Rufai has passed away at the age of 61 after a prolonged illness.

Rufai, popularly known as Dodo Mayana was key to Super Eagles’ success at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations, where he helped the West African country to claim the title for the first time.

The goalkeeper made 65 appearances for Nigeria and featured in two World Cup tournaments, where he gave a good account of himself.

“We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion,” read a statement from Super Eagles X handle.

“Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond.Rest well, Peter Rufai.”
Rufai played for Stationery Store in Nigeria, he featured for Begian sides Lokeren Oost-Vlaanderen and Beveren. He played in Netherlands with Go ahead Eagles before moving to Portugal where he stared for Farense.

He played in Spain with Hercules and Deportivo de La Coruna. Before ending his playing career, he returned to Portugal and featured for Gil Vicente.

Super Eagles Pay Tribute to Diogo Jota

The Super Eagles paid a tribute to Liverpool forward, Diogo Jota, following the car accident that claimed his life and that of his brother, Andre.

The Reds announced the death of the forward on Thursday. He was instrumental to the success of Liverpool last season, as the club claimed the Premier League title.

“We are sad to hear of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota,” read a statement from the Super Eagles X handle.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and teammates at this time. May his soul rest in peace.”
