A ban has been placed on all alcoholic beverages that are produced in sachets and bottles less than 200ml by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led government.
This ban was announced by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), saying that the deadline given to the producers of the sachet and pet bottle drinks on the 1st of January 2024.
The Nation reported that the five-year window given to the producers started in 2019 and ended on January 1, 2024.
Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director General of NAFDAC, while speaking in Abuja on Monday, February 5, stated that the decision to ban was the outcome of a multilateral committee and the agency started the enforcement on February 1, 2024.
Prof. Mojisola explained that the committee agreed that the production should be reduced by 50% in 2020 and it should be completely banned on January 31, 2024.
The NAFDAC DG noted that the agency decided to wipe out the drinks in order to prevent the adverse effects in underaged children, she said the drink came out in pocket friendly sizes, accessible and affordable, The underaged quickly fell for the packages only to face the consequences in the future.
