Controversy Erupts Over Senators’ Holiday Allowances Announcement [Video]

The announcement made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio concerning the payment of holiday allowances to members of the 10th Nigerian Senate has led to several mixed reactions.

On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, during a plenary Akpabio announced that a token had been sent to the senators’ accounts to facilitate their holiday enjoyment. This statement drew immediate attention from present members, prompting Akpabio to retract it.

He then expounded that in order to facilitate a pleasant holiday, he had sent prayers to the senators’ mailboxes, wishing them a safe journey and return.

Public sentiment regarding this development has been divisive. Some Nigerians criticized the lawmakers, accusing them of being insensitive to the ongoing hardships faced by citizens due to the fuel subsidy removal. Others acknowledged that the allowance was their entitlement.
